Make a start today. You could soon be moving into a home you can call your own.

Here's what you need to do if you are planning to buy a vacant Housing New Zealand property offered under the FirstHome scheme.

(If you are looking to buy the Housing New Zealand property you currently rent – click here)

  1. Check if you’re eligible – you can check the eligibility criteria or call us free on 0508 935 266.

  2. Obtain pre-approved finance from a certified lender – before you can submit an application you will need to have pre-approved finance showing the maximum amount you can borrow - see "Get finance".

  3. Apply to Housing New Zealand for a FirstHome and obtain an approval letter – you will need to complete an application form and gather the supporting documentation required. If you are eligible we will send you a letter confirming you are eligible to receive a grant from Housing New Zealand to help you buy a FirstHome property - see ‘How do I apply?’ below for more information.

  4. Contact the participating real estate agent/s in the area you are looking to buy.
We don’t currently have any properties available for sale through the First Home Ownership Programme.

Contact information for participating real estate agents are listed under each property.

  5. Find a suitable FirstHome – once you have found a suitable FirstHome you would like to buy the real estate agent will guide you through the purchase process.

  6. Sign a Sale and Purchase Agreement with Housing New Zealand.

Congratulations! You will soon be moving into a home of your very own.
