Five Wellington redevelopments underway

Construction has begun on some of the 145 new state housing units planned across 5 sites in Wellington City.

All 145 are one-bedroom apartments so as to best meet demand in the capital, which is mostly from single parents and couples without children. The first new homes are expected to be complete by June 2018.

Lower Hutt-based Armstrong Downes Commercial is building 34 one-bedroom units across three two- and three-storey buildings in Berhampore. The Britomart Street complex will be oriented toward a shared communal space, while maintaining privacy for tenants and neighbours. The apartments, designed by Studio Pacific Architecture, will each have an individual outdoor area.

Holmes Construction has started work on 20 units in Hanson Street. The new homes have been designed by Herriot Melhuish O'Neill Architects specifically for people with disabilities. The Mount Cook site is in close proximity to the hospital, social service agencies, shops and public transport routes.

Once complete, the 145 new apartments will drive a transformation in Housing New Zealand’s Wellington housing stock. The $48.5 million total investment will help create a portfolio of modern, fit-for-purpose homes that state housing tenants will enjoy for decades to come.

Build partners haven’t yet been confirmed for redevelopments of Owen Street in Newtown or the McLean Flats on The Terrace in Central Wellington. Owen Street will see 26 units built across 4 two-storey blocks, while McLean Flats will yield 34 apartments in a redevelopment that will refurbish and add a storey to the existing building, as well as adding a new standalone building.

These opportunities are likely to be exclusive to members of the recently created 100% HNZ Redevelopment Panel (Wellington). Find out more about how to apply for Housing New Zealand’s panel, on link).

Quality Homes NZ Limited will soon begin work on 3 two-storey apartment blocks on the corner of Philip Street and Frankmoore Ave in Johnsonville. The 21 units will be ideal for elderly or more mature people with no children as they’ll be close to most amenities including public transport.
